Ulay and Marina Abramović

Ulay and Marina Abramović

Witness the emotional reunion of Ulay and Marina Abramović during her famous performance art at the Museum of Modern Art.

Marina Abramović is a performance artist who once spent 700 hours sitting in a chair in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City back in 2010. During those hours, she sat in front of a table and another chair that people were invited to sit in and spend a minute or two in silence with Abramović. Celebrities sat in the chair, and some people stood in line for hours to sit with her.

Then, one day, her former love and fellow performance artist, Ulay, sat down. The video shows their brief meeting after decades apart. The initial shock at seeing him gives way to so many emotions all displayed on both of their faces.

Ulay and Marina Abramović had a long history of being performance artists. Sadly, in 2011, Ulay was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. While Ulay recovered in 2014 from lymphatic cancer, Ulay died on March 2nd, 2020; many suspect from lymphatic cancer.

While this is a very sad time in the art community, it gives us an opportunity to look back on the extraordinary bond and collaboration between two people that will live on in infamy.
